Stumbled across this today.. I was surprised I hadn't seen it before as Carl Sagan has been one of my favorite authors and quite an inspiration to me.
"Contact" has been a literary staple for my bookshelf for years, and while the movie doesn't quite do the original story justice (despite Jodie Foster's incredible portrayal of Ellie) it does manage to get the intended point across.
We are so small in comparison to the universe that holds us. We- as a planet, as a species, as a world- are so unlikely. And while it took just the right mixture of elements and other factors well beyond my educational reckoning, we can't be the only fluke in the whole universe. As it is stated in the movie.... "There are billions and billions of stars out there. And of only one in a million of those have solar systems and only one in a million of those have a planet capable of sustaining life....that means there are millions of other civilizations waiting to be to discovered."
........It's all about perspective.
